Are the Vega Shake & Go Smoothies Safe for Pregnancy?

I was wondering if the Vegan Shake and Go Smoothies are safe to use during pregnancy? I've seen conflicting thoughts on some of the ingredients, such as flax seed and spirulina use during pregnancy. I am not sure if there are is any mercury or metal content with the spirulina, etc. I just want to use this as an extra protein boost, now that I am in my second trimester, but want to hear if anyone has used it during their pregnancy? Or if Vega can give me some more insight on its safety?

I personally used all of the Sequel Naturals products except the MacaSure capsules (I did use the chocolate) during my pregnancy and (currently) breastfeeding. My 4 month old son is an extremely healthy and happy baby! I recommend the line to all of my pregnant patients and tell them I'm more worried about what poisons in the Standard American Diet have versus this line. However, to answer your question more specifically, I have never seen anything in the research (doesn't mean it's not there, just means I haven't seen it personally) about mercury in plants/spirulina; heavy metals tend to accumulate in animal fat (thereby why it attacks the brain and nervous system).

On another note, congratulations on your pregnancy and great job staying focused and present for your health and the health of your baby! Make sure you get adjusted by a pediatric and pregnancy focused chiropractor in your area for the best nervous system health. :) Check out and for doctor finders. If you're ever in Anchorage, Alaska, I'd be happy to help:

Did you use the Vega part of the Sequel line though? Or which products were you using? I already take a great pre-natal, so I am just looking to supplement the shake and go smoothies for some extra protein and want to know if any women had experience doing so through pregnancy.

 Hi Meghan,

We do not believe our product warrants a warning for pregnant or breastfeeding moms, there is nothing in Vega Shake & Go Smoothies  that one should be concerned about when breastfeeding or pregnant. Should you have any concerns it is a good idea to bring a list of ingredients to your health professional for review.

Thanks- hope this helps!

I drank Shake and Go smoothies and also WFHO during my pregnancy. Im my opinion there are much worse things that people should be concerned about during their pregnancy: sugar, processed foods, meat, dairy, etc. I was not worried about healthy food such as the vega line of product. I am no DR, but I know it helped me out a lot when I couldnt get much down due to morning sickness and helped round out my diet. The shake and go smoothies made a quick and easy snack to take with me, full of protein, when I was on the go.
Also: Because VWFHO is carries a natural health product designation you may have seen a warning on the container for pregnant or breastfeeding women. The regulations require us to put this standard warning on the label; its the same warning for all natural health products. Though we do not believe our product warrants a warning for pregnant or breastfeeding moms, we are simply complying with the regulations. There is nothing in Vega WFHO that one should be concerned about when breastfeeding or pregnant.
